RuneScape is one of the last second generation MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) games.

It was released after a huge number of games like Ultima Online and EverQuest, but just before World of Warcraft's MMO genre change.

OSRS is now a standalone game made from a 2007 server backup. This era is called RuneScape 2 and it became that title as the game switched from 2D to 3D.

Game

OSRS is a boring game in the best possible way. While the game can tell an interesting story about someone who overcomes ancient threats and prevents wars between the kingdoms, the gameplay is not that exciting.

Most accounts take up to 2,000 hours. This means you need around 2,000 hours for each skill to max level 99. By the way, halfway through 99 is 92.

Often you'll be doing an Away from the Keyboard (AFK) task that doesn't require attention. Often times, something you are doing can be so tedious and boring that you hate the current grind you're working on.

That's not all that is in the game, there are certainly big parts of the game that are fun and enjoyable.

But what keeps you coming back again and again is the feeling that you have achieved a goal that you sometimes wanted to achieve hundreds of hours earlier.

Game modes

There are four game modes for players who want something different from the game. From an extra challenge to restrictions that add thousands of hours to your journey.

Ironman - You cannot buy items from the Grand Exchange and you cannot trade with other players.

Hardcore Ironman - Same as Ironman, but when you die you lose your hardcore status and become a regular Ironman again.

Ultimate Ironman - You are limited to 28 character slots for items and cannot bank items.

Ironman Group - Same as Ironman except you can share items with other Ironman in groups of up to five players.
