The recently released HD mod for a third-party Old School Runescape client, RuneLite, has just received a major lighting update.

The improvement of Linear Space by modder known as 117, announced on the Patreon RuneLite HD website, will change the way light is calculated in the game. As explained in 117: “Previously, lighting was applied to colors in the gamma space. Now the colors are converted to linear space before exposure is applied, then the result is converted back to gamma space before being displayed on the screen. "

The update also fixed some "serious visual bugs" when using the RuneLite HD plugin, but requires a restart for it to take effect.

Some controversy initially arose when Jagex reportedly said 117 that a mod that had "roughly 2,000 hours of work in two years" had to be canceled because the studio has its own graphics enhancement mod that is "relatively early in the exploration stages".

Jagex later withdrew his statement, saying that he began "actively exploring options on how we can work together to provide Plug 117 as a bridge until our proprietary version is ready for release."

117 later confirmed that "the discussions with Jagex were fruitful and we reached an agreement that I am personally very pleased with."
