Read ThisMammoths are highly coveted ground mounts in World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic, but they can be quite expensive. While buying one from Mel Francis in Dalaran is the easiest option if you have a surplus of gold, the Ice Mammoth from the Sons of Hodir offers a more affordable alternative. However, acquiring this mount requires completing an extensive quest chain. This guide will provide a step-by-step breakdown of how to obtain the Ice Mammoth efficiently and, if you have the funds, the Grand Ice Mammoth as well.
Sons of Hodir Overview & Reputation Guide
The Sons of Hodir are a faction of frost giants residing in Dun Niffelem, located in the eastern part of Storm Peaks. They offer various items for sale, including shoulder enchants, recipes, and mounts. By default, the Sons of Hodir are hostile to all players, so you need to gain their favor to access their goods.
Sons of Hodir Reputation - Hated to Neutral
To begin, clear out the major quest hubs in The Storm Peaks. It's recommended to do this while leveling up to save time. The main hubs for Alliance players are Frosthold and Bouldercrag's Refuge, while Horde players should focus on Grom'arsh Crash Site, Camp Tunka'lo, and Bouldercrag's Refuge. Clearing these hubs will unlock the first quest in the chain, "They Took Our Men!," offered by Gretchen Fizzlespark in K3. Note that you need to be at least level 77 to access this quest.
The next step involves completing a chain of two dozen quests, culminating in "Sibling Rivalry." Although some quests like "Equipment Recovery" and "The Slithering Darkness" are optional, it's recommended to do them all for reputation gains with the Sons of Hodir. You need to reach Revered reputation with the faction to purchase the Ice Mammoth.
Sons of Hodir Reputation - Neutral to Honored
The second half of the quest chain is shorter and starts with the quest "Mending Fences" from Thorim. This quest requires you to kill Stormforged Giants east of Dun Niffelem. While doing this, keep an eye out for "Slag Covered Metal," an item that drops from the giants. You'll need this item to start the quest "The Refiner's Fire." Continue killing Stormforged Giants until you obtain the item, even if you exceed the required amount.
Once you complete Thorim's tasks, you can visit Dun Niffelem and interact with the Sons of Hodir. Complete all their quests, including side quests, to reach Honored reputation with the faction. At this point, you can purchase useful items from Lillehoff, the Sons of Hodir quartermaster, but the Ice Mammoth mount is still unavailable.
Sons of Hodir Reputation - Honored to Revered
Reaching Revered reputation with the Sons of Hodir is the final and most time-consuming leg of your journey. Since there are no more regular quests, you'll need to rely on daily quests to continue gaining reputation. There are five daily quests available in Dun Niffelem:
Hot and Cold
Hodir's Call
A Viscous Cleaning
Spy Hunter
How to Slay Your Dragon
Additionally, you can speed up reputation gains by turning in two types of items to the Sons of Hodir. Everfrost Chips grant 350 reputation and can be found sticking out of the ground throughout Storm Peaks, although they are rare and challenging to locate. Sons of Hodir Commendation Badges grant 520 reputation and are potential rewards from Archmage Timear in Dalaran for completing his daily dungeon quest.
Once you reach Revered reputation, visit Lillehoff and purchase the Reins of the Ice Mammoth for 850 WoTLK Classic gold. If you achieve Exalted reputation with the Sons of Hodir, the mount will cost only 800 gold. In addition, MMOexp offers WoTLK Gold for sale.
With this guide, you can obtain the Reins of the Ice Mammoth from the Sons of Hodir in WoW WotLK Classic. By following the step-by-step process and completing the necessary quests, you'll soon be riding your own mammoth mount through the icy landscapes of Northrend.
