"Madden NFL 22" review: the soccer series is finally going in the right direction

Sep-01-2021 PST Category: Madden 22

In August, "Madden 22" was released for game consoles and there were some significant changes that the game boasted. This is certainly a welcome sight, as fans have been demanding a major overhaul of Madden in recent years.

Let's take a look at the positives and negatives of the last installment - which I played on Xbox One - the world's most popular soccer game franchise.

What did I like?

Franchise Mode: This is one of the most popular modes in the video game franchise, and it's probably the mode I play the most. The franchise mode has certainly changed throughout the history of the game, but not entirely for the better.

It's worth noting that the franchise mode is more closely related to "Madden 22" which is welcome. In years past, when you opened your franchise, you had to look at your team's head coach sitting at a desk on your tablet. That disappeared in this year's episode, but some elements remained the same.

Now you have a little more freedom with the Coaching Staff, such as the "Franchise HQ" option, which allows you to upgrade the Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator and Player Staff. There are also talent trees and staff points that can be upgraded by meeting certain criteria throughout the season. You get staff points that allow you to purchase different development talents for each of the trainers. For example, under the guidance of the head trainer, you have items like "secret medicine" that you can purchase to speed up multi-week recovery time for players. This is an intriguing feature.

One area where I would like to see some changes to the franchise mode is Scouting. Just like last year, you can have auto-generated newbies or download someone else's draft class from the Madden community. However, "Madden 22" will receive a huge Scouting update when the game comes out in September with its first major update. With that in mind, I'll keep my judgment on the Scout update, but I wonder why the updated Scout wasn't ready for the first game launch.

The Yard: This is a new game mode added in Madden 21 and it's back. For those unfamiliar, this is a pick-up soccer game where you can take advantage of your created player "Face of the Franchise" in a 6v6 game. During "Face of the Franchise" you will be introduced to "The Yard" and you will have to play one of these games in story mode. Basically, you have to choose between playing The Yard in a charity pickup game with Seattle Seahawks star Russell Wilson in Hawaii or going to an event in New York with Saquon Barkley. It's probably not a mode you'll play for hours, but it's a fun option if you want a break from the usual Madden mode.

What I didn't like

Face of the Franchise: Career modes have become wildly popular in various sports video games in recent years. I'm a huge fan of career modes in games like "NBA 2K" and EA Sports's "NHL" series. Face of the Franchise has undergone changes in the last few episodes. One of the interesting additions is the fact that in "Madden 22" you can make a linebacker. You couldn't earlier.

As in the previous two episodes, players start playing two College Football Playoff matches, regardless of which college you choose to join. In previous episodes, you had to play high school for an entire season which was repeated. This year, after playing two Playoff College Football matches, that's it. You are not participating in the Scout Combine.

However, you still have a lot of design choice, and there isn't much logic in it. For example, my player was the quarterback and was voted with the best pick from the Jacksonville Jaguars. With Trevor Lawrence already on the list, why would Jaguars choose a different whistleblower? I would only appreciate a little more of the game logic in terms of the selection process. Face of the Franchise has definitely improved, but I still believe it could be a lot more realistic and fun like other sports game series have done.

This article ends here. I'd like to say if you do not know how to select a legitimate website when you are trying to buy Madden 22 coins, MMoexp is your best choice.
