Six years ago, Jagex took Old School RuneScape players for the first time for a (very uncertain) ride through their Deadman servers, hardcore PvP gameplay with greatly accelerated XP gain and penalty death sentences. Jagex held three or four seasonal competitions a year, challenging the best players to survive against the odds, with the prize money going to the best survivor. The last of these matches took place in May 2020, but is now back with a few changes for 2021.

The new experience is called Deadman: Reborn, and implementation details can be found on the OSRS website. The big changes from previous versions are the three-life system, where if you lose the last of the three "lives" in PvP, even the contents of your treasury and the most valuable saved items will go to your killer; battle-level worlds that restrict access by level, so you'll have at least some fair fights; and a "PJ timer" which allows you to breathe for 9.6 seconds where you cannot be attacked if you just finished another fight.

The "BIG Change" (their emphasis) comes in the form of Sigils, which provide powerful buffs that can be swapped out when you're in a safe zone and not scared. They come in three tiers, the highest of which is only available on high combat worlds.

The Deadman: Reborn season lasts one month and is available to anyone with a RuneScape member account. At the end of the month, the top 2048 players will face off in a series of 1v1 duels, cutting the field in half, then repeatedly and so on until there is only one winner left. As in previous Deadman tournaments, there is money at stake: $ 20,000 for the winner, $ 10,000 for second place, and $ 1,000 for third and fourth place. Hopefully it avoids the mess of the Deadman finale in March 2018.
