Runescape developer Jagex put an end to Runelite HD, the HD fan mod of the popular open-source client for Old School Runescape, just as the project was scheduled to launch last Monday. The 11am traffic made some Runescape fans dissatisfied with Jagex's decision, saying they would move on to other MMOs.

Developer Runelite HD "117" wrote on Reddit Tuesday, sharing a message he received from Jagex, which Jagex later confirmed in his own blog post. Runelite HD acts as a plugin that would provide a significant visual overhaul of the basic Runescape as seen on Twitter 117. Modder added that they spent around 2,000 hours working on Runelite HD in the past two years.

"Yesterday, we contacted the makers of well-known HD projects and asked them to stop developing their projects because this is a project that we are directly researching," said Jagex.

Jagex wrote to 117 that the company's work on the HD version of Old School Runescape was "relatively early in the exploration phase" but "very advanced".

"Obviously, this means that any fan-driven project to change the look of Old School RuneScape goes against our own plans," wrote Jagex to 117. "We think it's absolutely necessary to be consistent in how Old School The school looks like this, so we want our official changes to be the only ones available, I hope the news that Jagex and the Old School team are taking this project seriously also excites you, although it does mean we should politely ask to close our personal design."

117 said it offered Jagex a compromise to remove their design when Jagex released their design, and give Jagex "joint control" over the Runelite HD visual style.

“They flatly refused,” said 117. “I am very disappointed and frustrated with Jagex, and I am very sorry that after such a long journey I cannot share this project with you.

Mod 117 doesn't seem to violate Jagex's guidelines for external customers, but the developer of Runescape says he will update these guidelines next week with references to designs that affect the game's appearance.

Runelite's first developer, Adam1210, shared his thoughts on Reddit, saying it would have a net benefit for future Jagex updates should Runelite HD make it through.

"I also strongly disagree with adding it to the" third party guidelines, "said Adam1210. “Most of these guidelines try to figure out where the line is between [quality of life] and cheating - and I think most people agree with the current guidelines are a good illustration of this and help [sic] maintain the integrity of the game. However, there is no unfair advantage over enhanced graphics and it only affects you when you enable it. So - it's really just a guideline abuse. Overall, this is a loss for everyone involved, and I would like Jagex to reconsider.

Some fans of the Runelite HD project traveled to the square in Falador, the capital of one of Runescape's major kingdoms, to organize an occupation protest, similar to the one World of Warcraft players saw in July. Gamers can be seen in the video post's combined text dialogue criticizing Jagex for the decision, and hashtags such as # Free117. The next video shows more players "marching" outside of Falador Square.

It is currently unclear how long Jagex has known about the Runelite HD 117 project.
